    • Name Confusion Log
on: December 16, 2006, 12:08:31 am
Have you ever told someone you attend(ed) UNCC and they think you are talking about Chapel Hill or perhaps a community college?
Have you ever told someone you attend(ed) UNC Charlotte and they don't even understand what you are saying?
Have you ever said you are a UNCC fan and get the reply of, "Oh, the Tarheels?"
Have you ever seen a Charlotte activity ever miscredited as an activity of another school?
Have you ever seen Charlotte mislabled as UNC-C, UNC-Charlotte, or in any other incorrect manner?
Have you ever been the victim of any number of other possible confusions about our school's name?

If so, this is the thread for you!

I want to see just how many times incidents like this have happened. I think this will be good because it will show the misinformed just how confusing our name really is, give name change advocates something to use as support in arguments for a name change, and possibly serve as evidence when we finally make a real push for a name change.

Basically, if you would, please label your responses as Personal or Organizational. Personal is if it has happened to you, someone you know, etc. Organizational is like when Clay Aiken was said to have gone to Chapel Hill. I'm going to be updating the first post and have these as the sections so that this information is easily obtainable and understandable. When you post, references would be great (particularly for Organizational occurences) but are certainly not required. If you can better elaborate on an occurence which someone has already listed, please do so.

Please keep submissions legitimate. Nothing made up, please.

(1) The Charlotte men's basketball team was listed as UNC Charlotte and placed under the ACC on DirecTV's college basketball page. The Chancellor was informed about this on 11/29/06 and said he'd get the athletic dept. to get it fixed. To date, the webpage still has us listed as UNC Charlotte and under the ACC.
UPDATE: As of 6/5/07, it is still like this.

(2) Clay Aiken was stated as having gone to UNC-Chapel Hill on some television show. (This is one that should be further elaborated on.)

------------------------
(3) News14's web site had a story with several UNC-C references. I emailed them and they immediately responded and corrected it on the site within 30 minutes. Of course, the story was almost 2 weeks old and no one from the University PR department must have complained.
------------------------
(4) This made NATIONAL news on MTV back in 1999.

"Lit frontman, A. Jay Popoff was caught with his pants down - literally. According to MTVNews, while onstage at the University of North Carolina's Tremont Music Hall Wednesday night, Popoff dropped his pants, but not his Fruit of The Loom's, although it's alleged that he still revealed his, ahem, private member to the crowd. This incident prompted the police to surround the band's tour bus and arrest Popoff after the show for indecent exposure. He was then taken to Mecklenberg County Jail, where he signed autographs for the cops' kids from behind bars. Popoff was released after posting a $500 bond. A Nov. 22 court date has been set for Popoff to answer the charges in a North Carolina court."

The band played in Halton Arena. Where the hell did they get "Tremont Music Hall" from? Did they just pick at random the name of a music venue in Charlotte?

Also, I remember when they were advertising the concert on MTV (the tour was sponsored by them) they always said it was at the University of North Carolina. I was working for CAB (then called UPB) at the time and we got phone calls from people wondering if the concert was in Chapel Hill or here. I called the event programming board at UNC-CH and they said people had been calling asking where to buy tickets. Sigh.

We lost lots tens of thousands of dollars on that concert. Could have made more money if PEOPLE ONLY KNEW THE CONCERT WAS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE.

(5) The College Golf Store still has us mislabeled. It's Dec. 2006, we have had the athletic name of Charlotte for almost 7 years and they are still clueless. Pitiful.

They have been contacted about their error. We'll see what happens.

UPDATE: As of 6/5/07, it is still wrong.

(6) Wow this site is a doozy. This comes to us from our friends at Champs Sports, an offshoot of Foot Locker. Not exactly a small, inexperienced company. Anyways, if you go looking for any of our fan wear, among the lists of NCAA school's athletic's teams, they have an entry of UNC-Charlotte. 1) That usage of our name should be UNC Charlotte, with no hyphen and more importantly 2) our sports name is Charlotte, not UNC-Charlotte or UNC Charlotte. We've had that name for 6 years, they have a contract with us to sell our merchandise because I have bought several shirts from them, and they STILL can't get it right. And no, there isn't a listing for Charlotte and then a second one for UNC-Charlotte.

Now if that wasn't bad enough, click on UNC-Charlotte and the one item they have is a Tarheel blue shirt that says "Carolina." Obviously not one of ours.
UPDATE: We have been taken off the list completely. Date checked was 6/5/07, but could have been before.

(7) They identified James Tabor on this headline news story (FOX.com) from AP as being from the University of North Carolina...

(8) In USA Today a listing of odds by Danny Sheridan published daily for sporting events lists us as NC Charlotte. This means that every day we have a men's basketball game we are mislabeled in one of the most widely read newspapers in America.

(9) This is a direct quote from a story done by WCNC about our football initiative on 2/9/07. Not too big of a deal, but still:

UNC Charlotte junior Justin Ritchie, a leader of the student senate, told WCNC.

(10) Our own "Official Store" has us mislabeled as "North Carolina-Charlotte". You can't make this stuff up, folks.

If you look in the upper left corner of this picture, you will see the infraction:

(11)  This is another school that goes by the 49ers talking about the origin of the name.
Quote
And the University of North Carolina, also the 49ers, began as a teaching center in 1946 was closed then “saved” in 1949 as a two-year college, was not ultimately a University until 1963. While it's not clear when the mascot was adopted, it couldn't have been prior to 1949 when the college was “saved” which is the motivation for the mascot name. Some UNC Charlotte history can be read          here.

(12) According to Google Maps, the name of our school is "University of NC-Charlotte." In case you are unaware, Google Maps is one of the most widely used online map tools there is.

(16)Also came across this.... A mistake I personally like but a mistake none the less.

The Hilton at Charlotte University stands over a small lake as part of a lakeside retail development with specialty shops, bistros and cafés. The Hilton provides an ideal location for university guests and business professionals, only a block from Charlotte University and minutes from uptown Charlotte. Lowe's Speedway is five miles away. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is convenient to the hotel, 15 miles south on Interstate 85.

And another...

The four-story SpringHill Suites by Marriott Charlotte University Research Park hotel, with convenient access to Interstate 85, is located in a business park in Charlotte (N.C.), one mile from University Hospital and two miles from Charlotte's University of North Carolina campus. Downtown Charlotte is just 10 miles away. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is 15 miles or a 30-minute drive away.

(17) Apparently the guys at SoutherCollegeSports.com are slow. About 7 years slow. They call our baseball team "UNC-Charlotte" and not only don't use the right name, but they also use the hyphen.

(19) At the 2007 NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional in our first game against NC State, our team and players were introduced almost entirely as the "UNC Charlotte 49ers." I believe he said "Charlotte 49ers" maybe once or twice. For the three games we played after that, I believe it was announced correctly.
Ref: Unreferencable but I was there and heard it.
----------------------
(20) On a thread started by an established poster on Rivals.com, the thread starter called us "North Carolina Charlotte 49ers." In this same thread, another established poster calls us "UNC-C." This is not a big one because it is not from an organization, but is still evidence that this stuff happens.

This entry may need to be removed as it could be viewed as spurious.

For three years, the Charlotte, N.C.-based rock outfit The Sammies has been out to prove its self-asserted description as "the best thing to come out of North Carolina since tobacco." The band, which met at UNC's Charlotte branch, combines classic and indie rock to create a catalog representative of rock 'n' roll's potpourri of incarnations, but prides itself on its live presentation.

(24) So yesterday I ordered samples of some materials for the main entrance. Today, I have an email and the representative needed my work's FedEx # so that it could be there by monday. I give her this and then later I have a CC of an email she sent for the order and under project name it said "University of North Carolina Main Entrance."

Trust me, when I gave her the project information it said "The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Main Entrance."  I even checked the message I sent her to be sure I somehow didn't mess it up.

(25) The Charlotte, err UNC-Chapel Hill, Bobcats don't even get it correct in E.J. Drayton's draft workout story.
Quote
Charlotte's preparation for the 2007 NBA Draft continued Friday morning at the Presbyterian Hospital Training Center at Charlotte Bobcats Arena with Purdue's Carl Landry, UNCC's E.J. Drayton and Arizona's Ivan Radenovic all taking part in predraft workouts.

Drayton averaged 13.7 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds in his senior season at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The 6-9, 208-pound forward utilized a medical red-shirt season in 2005-06 after experiencing problems with tendonitis in his left knee in the preseason and early season.

(33) This is a very big one. During the summer of '07, UNC Charlotte was lucky enough to host a flower which is one of the biggest on Earth and blooms only once every few years or so. The flower bloomed in our own greenhouse and it was kind of a big story making local news and also being featured in stories in other national newspapers. Check out this egregious mistake on MSNBC.com. (In case the video ever gets taken down, the person speaking on the video also calls us "the University of North Carolina.")

(34) Yet another very bad one. In this article we are spoken well of, but in the title we are called "UNC." In the body of the article we are called UNC Charlotte in the first two paragraphs and then called "UNC" the rest of the time. This is bad because we are not "UNC" and furthermore, this reenforces the erroneous and perposterous idea that the two names are interchangable.

(35) This one is quite bad. On an Adopt A Highway sign that can be seen while driving on 49 toward our school's main entrance it says "UNCC - Charlotte."

This first picture is taken at the intersection of 49 and John Kirk/Old Concord, from the 76 gas station parking lot, and facing the city and the direction of our front entrance. The sign in question can be seen on the right side just above the wing of that red car.

(37) On FOX News Rising this morning (8/7/07), we were called UNC. A lady whose name I can't remember basically said '4 police officers were honored today for their help during a fire on the UNC campus.'

I honestly was not sure whether they were talking about us or UNC when I heard this. I even looked it up on the internet and saw that UNC had had a fire in 2006 so for most of today I thought they were talking about UNC until I saw the story on news 14. I thought what we had was an explosion, not a "flash fire."

In case you hadn't heard, she was refering to this.

(41) The DirecTV TV listing for a basketball game in which we were to face Fordham on Sunday February 16, 2008, had it listed as "UNC-Asheville vs. Fordham."  It was also listed incorrectly on the MASN website but there is no picture for this. This is the third time that I know of where our name has confused us with UNC-Asheville.

(42) For the 11/09/07 men's basketball game between Duke and NC Central University, ESPN had it listed as "Duke vs. UNCC" on their website's scoreboards and on the teams' ESPN pages. The score on the teams' pages has since been corrected.

(43) NASCAR Cup driver David Ragan's website as late as 2/25/08 listed him as having attended 'the University of North Carolina Motorsports Program.' David Ragan actually attended the UNC Charlotte Motorsports Program. UNC-Chapel Hill does not even have a motorsports program.

David's website has since been overhauled and no mention of him attending college is included.

(45) At the ACUI Regional College Bowl around the week of 2/25/08, everything related to us was listed as "University of North Carolina - Charlotte." There is no hyphen in our school's name.

(46) So I'm looking around Charlotte.com because I feel like reading a story about the Niners. After I'm done, I come across a link to "University of North Carolina NCAA." I click on it for whatever reason and find Charlotte 49ers stories. So I'm thinking maybe it's a page dedicated to UNC system schools' athletics. I scroll down and see nothing but Charlotte stories. The web address even had "/charlotte" as an extension.

Now I'm wondering where in the hell North Carolina basketball is and have to go through the site map to find it. Turns out the tarheels have multiple pages and none of the links lead to the page I was at before. I find where we are and we have multiple pages; and at the top of our list, is a link to "University of North Carolina NCAA." So this did indeed turn out to be a webpage dedicated to stories about our athletics but but labeled with UNC's name. This being linked from charlotte.com as well, mind you. This one's a bummer.

Where I found the link:

(47) In the create a player mode of 2K Sports "NBA 2K8," when selecting the college the created played graduated from, we are listed as "UNC-Charlotte." Our name has no hyphen in it.

(48) Last night on the Larry King show on CNN, the host (not Larry King, a guess host of Wolf Blitzer) went to Anderson Cooper via satellite, so that Cooper could give a plug for his show. Cooper was reporting from campus because Obama was in Charlotte. As Cooper was finishing the preview of his show he mentioned that he was reporting live from UNC Charlotte. When Blitzer, in the studio, heard Cooper's comments, he said "Ahh, UNC. I believe I've heard of that school before". It was said in a sarcastic tone, like everybody's heard of UNC.

It probably doesn't need to be said, but even though many of us may not watch Larry King, CNN is the most watched channel in the world!
----------------------
(49) Around 4/01/08 on ESPN, Scott Wilbon was covering some of the greatest "cinderella runs" of the NCAA Tournament. Wilbon said that "Cornbread Maxwell and UNC Greensboro" made the run in 1977. One of our greatest athletic accomplishments was credited to another school due to our name.
----------------------
(50) On 4/04/08, President Bill Clinton spoke in Halton Arena to support his wife Hillary's bid for Presidential Election. When introducing the student who would introduce Bill, the lady told us to give him "a big UNC welcome!" I did nothing as I do not know how to give a big UNC welcome since I am not a student there.

(51) While looking online at apartments in the area I came across this site. They call us "UNCC Charlotte." Figures that they are State grads.

As of 8/23/08 it is still this way.
----------------------
(52) On UNC Charlotte's own website, this photograph is in a small rotation of pictures. I'm sure I've seen it at least a few dozen times myself. One could argue that there is 2nd 'C' hiding somewhere on her left side but I think it's pretty obvious that there isn't.

So there is a girl with a "UNC" shirt on in our student section, part of a group of students with shirts on that combined say "UNC Niners" and this is on our own website. Take time to let this one sink in a bit.

(53) [04-19-2008] At si.com every school has a team page with photos, news, schedule, etc. Fordham has action photos of Fordham players, Temple has photos of Temple players, and Charlotte has photos of Chapel Hill players cutting down pieces of the net for the Final Four.

(54) This comes from 2006 Sporting News article.
"Not to leave the women out, I give you Ivana Mandic. Miss. Mandic played center for the UNC 49ers. I don’t have any stats on her, but I hear she was a great ball handler. Wouldn’t it be a great piece of irony if she turned out to be a lesbian?"

Ivana Mandic actually played for the Charlotte 49ers.

(57) About our theater professor, Lon Bumgarner: "He has directed and produced features, shorts, as well as over 50 national and international commercials and served on the faculties of four Universities. He presently holds the post of Lecturer at UNC/Charlotte. In 1999 he was awarded the North Carolina Screenplay Fellowship Award."

I'm not sure if this is a name confussion, or a confusion between the space bar (or the hyphen button) and the forward-slash button.

Every school (JCS, Queen's, etc.) EXCEPT "University of NC" has a mortar cap marked on the map.

It's like the school doesn't even exist.

(76) I got an email and the subject line reads "Commencement Info for December 2008 UNC Graduates." I clicked on the email and the body is an advertisement for college rings. The next link is to where you can buy rings and the link itself says "Order your UNC college ring." On this linked page we are called "University of North Carolina-Charlotte."

So not only do they call us UNC twice and tell me to buy a UNC college ring, they call us UNCC on one page and UNC-C on the other. They can't even be conistant on their own website.

Order your announcements
                    Order your UNC college ring

I used to work at Auto Bell, and while cleaning a man's car and making small talk I told him I was in college. He asked where I went to school and I told him UNC Charlotte. He said, "Oh, the Tarheels?" I said, "No, like UNCC... just up the road... University of North Carolina at Charlotte." The whole time he looked at me with a baffled look. I asked him where he was from and he said Charlotte. I asked if he had never heard of us and he said no. Man was I steamed.

Quote from: LakeNorman49er
i was in atlanta on business and stopped by a bar. the bar was heavily populated with georgia grads. the bartender told me the ga tech grads hung out at the bar across the street. he asked where i went. i told him uncc and he suggested a bar where uncc grads hung out. he confused uncc with unc. the bar had numerous tarhole bumper stickers in the parking lot and i realized he had confused the 2 schools.

Quote from: TheNinerAlchemist
My girlfriend's grandmother is getting up there in years and, no matter how many times we tell her, we just cannot convince her that we both go to UNCC because she can't process it. She still thinks we're Tarheels I believe and it's NOT cool.

Quote from: TheNinerAlchemist
I have a friend who lives in California and I was asking her where she wanted to go to college, and, during the discussion, I jokingly suggested she go here knowing she can't simply pack up and move to North Carolina, and she said "What? No, I'm not talking about community colleges."

Quote from: NinerATL2CHA
My OWN FAMILY (from Atlanta) STILL has problems understanding that UNC Charlotte is not a branch of Chapel Hill.

Everytime this past year Chapel Hill lost in football (which was quite frequent), my brother would chastise me about it on the phone or at family events. "Ha ha... UNC sucks, man. You guys should just give up..."

I keep telling him, "Look, man... Charlotte is not a branch of Chapel Hill. Charlotte is just in the University of North Carolina system." He just looks at me confused. Then, a week later I hear it all over again. He thinks somehow we should suffer just by association...

My mom thinks the same way... I tried to use the University of Georgia and the University System of Georgia as an example, but I don't think that resulted in any progress...

this guy's first post EVER, all because of this issue...
Quote from: tony
First off, I read this board a lot but have not yet posted. However I do agree with the general feelings towards the direction of our program. My name's Tony and I'm a 2006 grad. Anyhow, my own cousin plays on the Cornell women's basketball team and when we joke around about her taking a trip to North Carolina to play my school she still thinks she'd be playing the Tarheels. Her response is always, nah, they'd never schedule us. I'm like Shannon come on I GO TO UNC CHARLOTTE - WE'RE THE 49ERS!!! It's bad enough when your own relatives can't figure out where you went to school...esp when they are in D1 athletics.
Quote from: NinerLoudNProud
TRUE FACT (which I am ashamed of):  My dad once referred to us as the dreaded UNCC-Charlotte.

Quote from: Darryl_Banks
So a friend of mine calls me during the Indiana game, and I mentioned to her that "I'm watching us get drilled by the Indiana Hoosiers." She happened to also be watching the game on her TV. . .

A few minutes go by, and she asks me if I'm not going to a UNCC game tonight ("don't they play their games on Saturdays?"). At this point I'm paralyzed, completely dumbfounded. . . Ummmm. . . I'm WATCHING THE GAME RIGHT NOW, you know. . . She says oh, she was confused because on TV it says "Charlotte.":weep:
Quote from: Darryl_Banks
About two or three years ago, the teenage kid who lives across the street from me said he was flipping through the channels, and he happened to catch a game of ours. This was during our CUSA days, probably on Channel 64.

He said he thought it was a pretty good game, and that he didn't realize there was a college basketball team right here in Charlotte. This kid is a Charlotte native, mind you, and in high school at the time. I said to him, "So it never occurred to you why it is that you live in 'The University Area?' It's because there is a university that's like, fifty feet from your backyard." I'm talking walking distance from campus, literally.

Quote from: ChevEE
My senior year of high school my family had an exchange student from Brazil for the whole school year. I told him I was going to UNCC and he kept thinking I was going to Chapel Hill. When I corrected him, he said, no the one in Charlotte is UNC isn't it? I think the day he left he finally had it straight... That there is no school in Chapel Hill. And Charlotte is the best university!!! Go Niners!
Quote from: casstommy
Both my mom and dad cannot figure out that I graduated from UNC CHARLOTTE...they call it everything under the sun EXCEPT UNCC.....

On the flipside....my grandfather is a big wig at U of Arizona in Tucson..........he has no problem understanding the difference...although he has only stepped foot inside Halton 1 time....for my graduation.

I say this to illustrate an important fact regarding our name........the number 1 missuse of the name seems to come from people WITHIN OUR OWN STATE. What gives?
Quote from: Submarley734
Every single one of my relatives in South Florida think that I graduated from Chapel Hill. I'll tell them I graduated from UNC Charlotte, and they say, "Oh, Go Tarheels." I told them that we changed our location, color, and name sometime last year, and that we are no longer the carolina blue tarheels from chapel hill; we are now the Green 49ers from Charlotte. I told them it was time for an upgrade. It was fun to confuse them.

Quote from: forDniner
I ran into a friend of mine and was asking her how her kids were doing. She said great and that her oldest just started going to UNC. I said, "was it hard for him to move so far from home?". She replied, "no, the one here." :unhappy:

Two Christmas ago my own Grandma bought me a UNC Tar Heels sweater as a gift. After laughing about it with my family and wondering if she thought I went there or thought I was a fan we went about our Christmas activities. Later that night she calls of course to wish a Merry Christmas and I thank her for her gift. She then asks me "Ohh yea, the sweater of your schools I figured I would get you something to wear around school or to games or whatever."

Thanks Grandma.

On 1/20/07 he had gone to Ham's to watch the GW game, but it turned out they weren't even carrying it...
Quote from: 49erDrummer
...when I had first asked the waitress "Are you carrying the Charlotte 49er's game?" ... and she said "who?" ...when I replied "You know, UNCC," she looked me dead in the face (with my 49ers TShirt on) and said "Oh? Are the Tarheels playing today?"

....my friends and I promptly made a B-Line for Picasso's

Quote from: forDniner
Okay, I just called Ham's to make sure they were showing the game. The woman who answered the phone first said they were showing it then said "wait, who?" I said "the Charlotte 49ers". Her response - "Who is that". I almost just said "turn around and look at all the green freaking banners behind you" but I didn't, I calmly explained "UNC Charlotte."

Does anyone remember UNC Charlotte has a Credit Card deal w/ MBNA/BofA?
I called to check on my acct., & the lady said, "I see you're calling on you're Alumni Association card for UNC."
Quote from: zerogeneticsdc1
My new neighbors asked me what I was doing and where I was going - so I told them I went to Charlotte - they then asked me how much I was enjoying UNC... Saddly enough, even after trying to jam an explanation stating we are actually UNCC not UNC i thikn they still think i go to UNC...
Quote from: ninerID
today at lunch I was asked if we were a satellite campus? and that the only reason they figured we weren't is b/c we had a different mascot.
Quote from: 49erforum.com
I've had a lot of family members from other states confuse us with Chapel Hill. When I correct them and say i'm at Charlotte they get embarassed, which allows me a moment to tell them all of the great things I love about UNCC. Especially how much better it is than Chapel Hill.
Quote from: 49or bust
While walking back after the rain delay at Game 6 of the 2007 NCAA Tournament Baseball Regional against USC, I heard a Wofford fan call us "North Carolina Charlotte."
Quote from: f-o-r-t-y-n-i-n-e-r-s
When I was in NJ for vacation a few weeks ago, my grandmother was introducing me to her friends and talking about how I just graduated from UNC. I took her aside later and said that its UNC Charlotte or just Charlotte. She replied that there is no difference. The reasoning behind this is because in NJ, Rutgers, which is the state university has five campuses, Newark, Camden, New Brunswick, etc. Whether you go to Camden or New Brunswick you still go for the Scarlet Knights and receive a diploma from Rutgers, the State University of NJ. She, along with most of my family believe that I go to a satellite school of UNC, therefore I got my diploma from UNC. THe only family members who know that I go to UNC Charlotte are the ones that follow sports and know us as Charlotte. It kills me to hear my family so proud of my graduation and that it is from UNC instead of Charlotte.
Quote from: J Felt
Went in to interview for a job on Monday. The lady looked at my resume and saw "UNC Charlotte" and went, "Ooooooo UNC, I don't know. I hate those Tarheels."

I said, "No, it's UNC Charlotte."

Her reply was, "Same difference, it's UNC."

I went on to explain how many of us in Charlotte, including myself, actually despise Chapel Hill. The worst parts are that this girl attended Southern Miss, an old CUSA foe, and has lived in Greensboro for quite some time.
Quote from: 49RFootballNow
While I was at work bartending tonight I had two incedences, both while watching blue Carolina vs, red Carolina baseball super-regional.

First I was cheering on S. Car. when a customer said "you must be a Gamecock fan". I explained that I wasn't and that I was raised to hate the Heels and that it only got worse when I went to Charlotte. He asked "who" so I explained it was UNC Charlotte. He said "well you should be wanting UNC to win!". Mind you, I want this very nice but confused man to tip me, so I gently explained it to him and he finally got it.

Same bacis thing happened with a really nice woman 45 minutes latter. I explained again using the line "We have as much connection with UNC-Ch as do NCSU and ECU".

This happens to me all the time. The worst thing is that both these customers told me they are former residents of the Charlotte area! They hardly had a clue about us!

jesus christ, i just got this as a birthday present from my dear mom:
http://darrylbanks.net/graphics/img078.jpg

Hope she still has the receipt, because this thing will not be staying in my house. Oh, and not only that, she told me a while back how she heard our mascot got killed. . . the years of explaining this over and over have done no good.

It really was an excellent gift idea, though, considering how often I wear 49er gear. Maybe giving this back to her will finally drive the point home.
Quote from: Gill2003
This happenend a few years ago. When I first told my Canadian cousins about 'unc' Charlotte, they said "the place where MJ played".

I kinda felt bad correcting an elderly lady the other day... she and her grandson were buying some things at my store, and college came up because he is going to be a freshmen at NCSU in their wordworking program (or something of that nature). I told them I went to Charlotte, and she said that he almost decided to do MEGR at UNC... I jumped in and corrected her saying that we werent UNC. But it is sad that people who were obviously from the area didnt realize that we arent UNC.....
Quote from: J Felt
My girlfriend's parents had some friends in town, and the visiting friend (female) asked me what school I attended, and my major, etc. I told her I went to UNC Charlotte for Marketing and asked if she had ever heard of it.

Her reply was that of course she had heard of it, she and her husband flew through Charlotte often in years past and saw "our shirts" every where. I was shocked, but I knew something was up. She asked what our team name was and I said, "Forty-Niners" and she said she didn't remember that.

And then she said, "Your school colors ARE blue and white though, right?"

I had to explain to her the whole UNC-system and that she was thinking of UNC-Chapel Hill and it's a common misconception.

So I'm playing on XBOX Live (my gamertag is Charlottedude) and this guy asks if I'm from Charlotte. I reply yes and he asks where abouts I live. I tell him near the university. He asks what university and I say Charlotte and then he says, "Oh, UNCC Charlotte?" I just said yes and exitted the area... *sigh*

my girlfriend recently went to a debutant dance thing with one of her friends with a lot of girls who went to our high school, and she said that when she said she went to UNC Charlotte, a girl asked, "is that a four year school?" she said yes...and then she asked "do they have sports?"

ive heard 'do they have sports' before, but come on...asking if it's a four year school? No. it's a 2 year community college that they just threw into the UNC system. So are NC State and App, if you've heard of them...gah..talk about someone who's been spoon fed where to go to school their whole life.

I've been trying to move into this house near school and had to barrow a screwdriver from one of my neighbors. I was introducing myself and making small talk and he asked, "Do you guys go to UNC?" Of course I wanted to say something more like "UNC? We're nowhere close to Chapel Hill" but I had just met the guy so I just said "yea" and let it pass.

Random post, don't know why I didn't post it earlier in this blog. I was cleaning out my room and thought about this, figure I'd share. A couple of years ago (when the Panthers played St. Louis in the NFC divisional playoff '03) I had a green toboggan with UNCC stitched on the front. I had bought this toboggan in the campus bookstore and finally had the opportunity to wear it. So there I was, all decked-out in Panthers' gear and a UNCC toboggan to keep the cold wind away. This man behind me starts talking smack, making fun of me because he thinks I like the Green Bay Packers. I had no idea as to what he was talking about, then I realized he's looking at my toboggan. When I explained that UNCC is a university in Charlotte, he's like "Oh, okay, sorry man." It just pissed me off plus to make matters worse, it was in front of my best friend who went to NC State. So I guess my point in a round-about way is not only do we get confused with Chapel Hill, we also get confused with the Green Bay Packers!!!

This one is personal, and just happened today. I conducted a phone interview for a business I will not name......the recruiter was working out of another state and somehow she brought up the NCAA tourney. She said I noticed you go to UNCC......she then told me how disapointed she was that we beat her old school really badly................................THE ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS. Almost had me stuttering the rest of the interview from that one.

Quote from: LoyalNiner
I was in the Final Score store at Concord Mills tonight. I told the store owner that he needed more Niners merchandise. We started talking and after about 30 minutes we got on to the topic of admissions and where in the state most of our students are from. I told him that we get students from all over the state even though a majority probably come from the Charlotte area. He said he thought that was strange because he thought they would go to a branch of the university that was closer to where they lived. I had to explain that all the universities were separate institutions even though we all have UNC at the beginning of our name. I guess it's not really his fault for not knowing any better but it is still frustrating. The university doesn't do enough to educate the community about our school.

Quote from: Sideshow
I started a new job this week. I was introduced in front of all 140 employees of the company as a graduate of the University of North Carolina, for both my undegrad and master's studies (I went to UNC Greensboro for grad school). I had to try not to cringe as everyone clapped and smiled and welcomed me.

Quote from: Over40Niner
A consulting company contacted me last year wanting to discuss hiring me for some of their long-term contracts. I went to talk to them, and when the recruiter saw my resume, he said "Oh, I see you're a tarhole fan". I politely showed him the "CHARLOTTE" on the resume, and he seemed surprised when he found out we have grad school. He also said he knew nothing about us, athletically or academically.

When the interview session was over (and I had already made up my mind), I rode the elevator back down to ground level and stepped out onto the streets of DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTE.

Unbelievable !!!

Quote from: 49or bust
Yesterday at the women's volleyball game against Howard, we were joking around with their head coach a lot and at one point he came by and was talking with us. We had noticed that his shirt underneath his jacket said "un" but we couldn't make out the rest so while he was talking to us, someone asked what his shirt said besides "un." He opened up his jacket to show us and then asked 'did you think it would say UNC?' or something else where I know he was trying to say the name of our school. Then the person who asked him to show us his shirt said 'Actually we're UNCC' and the coach said 'Oh yea, UNCC' or something like that. Can't remember the exact dialog, but still name confusion.

Quote from: 49or bust
Today after spreading the good word about the rally around Panther's Stadium, we went to Hooters. Our waitress was pretty annoying. She was either trying to be too nice or work the tip wayyy to hard but she just stood there and kept talking to us. And none of us showed obvious signs of interest and it was really strained conversation. In fact, I believe this entry could also be included in the "How To Not Be A Waitress Log" if anyone has one.

Anyway, she was talking about how she went to JCSU and was talking to us about our school after we told her we went to UNC Charlotte, and she said "yea I kinda wish I had gone to UNC." Later when we were leaving the table she said to me, "You guys have convinced me I should go to UNC." No, I never bothered correcting her. I was tired from low sleep and walking around downtown and I really didn't want to talk to that chick anymore. Good luck at Chapel Hill, Hooters girl!

Quote from: Gill2003
So I was scre.... I mean respectfully dating this girl, and one time I was up at Chapel Hill. She is a LSU fan/grad. We are at Chapel Hill Hams, and she turns to be and says, Dont you feel at home?

I laughed, thinking she wa sjoking. She then looked at me puzzled in the way that blondes often do, and says, didn't you graduate from here?

I said no. She asked, I thought you said you were a UNC grad.

I say I am, UNC Charlotte.

She says... Isnt it the same thingy?

Quote from: J Felt
I had one of Jenn's friends at VT ask me why I wasn't cheering for "UNC" next week. She said, "I thought you went there."

I said, "No, UNC Charlotte."

She goes, "Aren't they all the same?!"

Le, sigh. Jenn set her right though.

Quote from: 49or bust
Today I went to a car show with one of my friends and his car club. When we went to dinner, the VT vs. UNC game was on. When VT sacked UNC's qb I cheered and one of my friend's club buddies said, "You're not pulling for UNC? Why??" I said, "I hate UNC with a passion." And he said, "But you go to UNC.." Also keep in mind that I heard this guy talk about "UNCC" earlier in the day and I had on a "CHARLOTTE FORTY-NINERS" shirt. This kid isn't slow or anything though he may qualify as what we would call a "Wal-Mart Tarheel Fan" but he is a good guy. People just don't understand.

Quote from: Noreaster
I was in Chapel Hill for the VT game. When I mentioned to someone that I went to Charlotte, they responded, "Oh, UNC?" I said, no UNC Charlotte. They asked why I was wearing a VT shirt, and if we got tickets to the games when I was in school.

Huh?

Quote from: Cha_49er
My coworker (from Charleston SC) was explaining to people in my office about what he heard on Fox News Edge last week when the comments were played. He said that he heard me on there, and was trying to remember what I said. He tried to quote me as saying "Go UNC" (which is totally wrong, I said Go Niners).

So obviously this gets my blood boiling, and I VERY sternly said to him, WHAT SCHOOL DID I GO TO? He replies with "Dude, they are all the same! Its all one big school!" Needless to say his head almost came off at that point. However I calmly explained to him what common sense is, and he retorts......So you guys are like their Little Brother huh?

Quote from: NinerAl
Today I told a guy in Winston how excited I was that it looks like Charlotte was going to get football. He asked how many students we had now, and when I replied we had 22,000 and expected to be over 28,000 by 2015, he came back with "Wow, you guys have more students than the main campus, it's about time they let you have football." As I tried to explain the UNC system, he looked at me as if he just didn't believe it. While this guy graduated from the Citadel, he had two daughter recently graduate from NC State and is an avid sports fan. He's lived in NC for over 60 years and thought that every school with UNC was a satellite of Chapel Hill.

Quote from: Chisox17
So my parents are planning on moving within 6 months or so, and over the last couple years have had a few big yards sales. Last fall, I went home to help out with one. Needless to say, I met all kinds of people, which was cool. So I have on a CHARLOTTE 49ers shirt (as always), and a nice lady that I had been chatting with says "so you go to UNC?" Thinking she is just some clueless member of the general public, it didn't really shock me. "Oh haha no unc CHARLOTTE." I politely say. "Oh uhh well yeah." She says. Right when I think I'm going to let her off the hook for just being another uninformed soul who has never really had any ties to the University (I figured she was from out of state or something), she spit out this info... "Well that's awesome, I'm a fan. My son goes there, and I went there, and was freinds with Cedric Maxwell when I was there."

JESUS H CHRIST!!!

THIS LADY HAD A SON IN SCHOOL AT CHARLOTTE!
SHE WENT TO CHARLOTTE!!
SHE WAS GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE STAR OR FOUR FINAL FOUR TEAM!!!
....and she STILL refers to us as freakin' UNC!!!
Quote from: 49timesthelovin
A couple months ago when my sister had decided to come back to school and better yet decided Charlotte was where she would go, she kept referring to it as UNC no matter how many times I corrected her. Personally, I don't think she has us confused with Chapell Hill. It's actually more likely that she doesn't realize Chapell Hill exists and she was calling the school UNC for short. She doesn't do it anymore, but it was really frustrating for a while. I cut her a break though, because she is a sweet girl and has absolutely no interest in sports which is why she may not know Chapell Hill exists.

I'm decently active on the message boards at collegelax.us, which is where people discuss the happenings in the MCLA, which is what Charlotte's lax team is a member of. I tend to be one of the people to go to if someone needs to contact the team. The following is an exchange I just had via PM.

WallyLaxFan wrote:Question:

Here's two whopper's from someone in admissions...

Somebody called and asked, "Isn't this where Michael Jordan played basketball?"

Another time somebody called in and asked for directions to the Admissions office. She was instructed to get there from the front entrance. After much confusion, admissions simply asked what buildings the caller was around. After naming many buildings not on our campus, admissions asked, "Excuse me Ms., but where did you say you were?"

Her response, "I'm on your campus! In Chapel Hill!"

Le, sigh.

I was also told the confusion happens quite often and sometimes people ask to be forwarded to Chapel Hill when they realize there's a difference.

personal.

i was in atlanta on business and stopped by a bar.  the bar was heavily populated with georgia grads.  the bartender told me the ga tech grads hung out at the bar across the street.  he asked where i went.  i told him uncc and he suggested a bar where uncc grads hung out.  he confused uncc with unc.  the bar had numerous tarhole bumper stickers in the parking lot and i realized he had confused the 2 schools.  i went in the bar anyway but turned around and immediately left.  the bar was a gay bar.

News14's web site had a story with several UNC-C references.  I emailed them and they immediately responded and corrected it on the site within 30 minutes.  Of course, the story was almost 2 weeks old and no one from the University PR department must have complained.

How about this blast from the past:  This made NATIONAL news on MTV back in 1999.

The greatest 49er Pep Band drummer ever.  Sorry Dustin.

I have mountains of press clippings and scrapbooks from UNCC playing days littered with all the usual UNCC misrepresentations. I gave up in the minorleauges, and quit trying to explain to people who said "you were a tarheel."

its very simple:
people who don't want name change like being confused with UNC. And thats the last thing I want someone to associate me with.

-My girlfriend's grandmother is getting up there in years and, no matter how many times we tell her, we just cannot convince her that we both go to UNCC because she can't process it.  She still thinks we're Tarheels I believe and it's NOT cool.

-I have a friend who lives in California and I was asking her where she wanted to go to college, and, during the discussion, I jokingly suggested she go here knowing she can't simply pack up and move to North Carolina, and she said "What?  No, I'm not talking about community colleges."
I turn all things to gold.

Those initials arn't that bad. Everything that commonly goes by initials is going to have some other organization with the same initials. Our System has the name initials as Uni. of North Colorado and Uni. of North California. If we did get the name changed to University of Charlotte, we'd have the same initials as Cinci.

I've never had a problem at all within my family, and they're all from Virginia...and if anyone had a problem with it I would expect them to be in that group...but they know..and they refer to it as Charlotte..My uncle is a tarheels fan, he grew up in VA, and he knows who Charlotte is...he always asks how the teams doing.  My dad's friend lives in Rock Hill and is an ACC fan but has been to Halton to see the Niners before and also always asks me about the team.  So hopefully that offers a little encouragement..someone somewhere knows who we are..lol.

At this point I'm paralyzed, completely dumbfounded. . .  Ummmm. . .  I'm WATCHING THE GAME RIGHT NOW, you know. . .  She says oh, she was confused because on TV it says "Charlotte."   :weep:

Then I say, wait til the guys on the message board hear this one. . .

This one is not about name confusion, but another one about not being aware of our very existence:

I am surprised no one has related a conversation with Phil Dubois yet!
The greatest boon in the popularity of Chapel Hill sports was the advent of cash registers that automatically figure change.
