During the 76-77 season I attended all home games, the Sunbelt Tourney and the NCAA games vs syracuse, michigan, and marquette. I have some memorabilia from then in my attic in the event anyone needs to pick my brain or the few mementos.

What do you have? I have the round wooden Final Four Plaque in my "man-cave". In fact, I had 2 but one split in half and I think I trashed it.

I may have spoken too soon. That stuff is in my dusty, web-infested attic, but I have some newspaper clippings, some drinking glasses, some magazines buried in a pile, etc. One day I'll go through it. Maybe when we return to the FF or the school solicits the stuff as museum pieces.

No one cared about that UNLV game.  I think that may have been the last year the NCAA had the consolation game.

I know the consolation game was played at least the next two years, as Notre Dame and Arkansas played a classic in 78 which Arkansas's Ron Brewer won on a last second shot.  In 79 DePaul ripped Penn.

The last 3rd place game was in 1981.

I'm just honored to be able to still remember it.  That play was in my opinion the most memorable play in the history of Niner basketball, edging out Diego's 3 pointer against the holes and Plavich's half point shot against IU.  Kinch's shot was not the game-winner, but it sure stopped Michigan in their tracks and took the remaining wind out of their sail in what is beyond a doubt the biggest win in our program's history.

A NY alum friend sent this old NY Times article to me as we remembered Lew Massey. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/18/sports/ncaabasketball/18charlotte.html?pagewanted=print&_r=1&

Been thinking about the 76-77 FF with the deaths of Dean Smith and Jerry Tarkanian during the past week. That leaves Lee Rose as the sole surviving HC from that quartet in Atlanta.

Yep. Since there was a Consolation Game back then, they are leaving us in the same order of how they finished the FF: 1st McGuire 2nd Dean 3rd Tark.... :(

That's a very observant observation.

Easy, since I was there and will NEVER forget the awesome week of joy leading up to the FF  :p and the abject sadness of losing to marquette the way we did.  :( >:(
