I suppose our capital campaign must have offset what probably would have been a loss.

Also surprising that UNC Greensboro seems to have an endowment worth $53M more than us.  I know they've been around forever under other names, but we both joined the UNC System pretty much at the same time.  Digging into the tables, our endowment value in 2016 is $181,496,000 and Greensboro's is $235,021,000

Greensboro has been around way longer. Makes sense.

Who would of thought the "Harvard of the mountains" has smaller endowment than LR, Meredith, and Queens?

There is a lesson here for our new Niners.  Start putting money into retirement early and the magic of compounding over time will take good care of you.  I suspect that has more to do with the size of UNCG's endowment than anything else.

Start small.  I remember my first job paid very little but I still auto deposited $50 from each paycheck into a savings account.  I basically paid myself before paying other bills. It wasn't much but it still grew over time especially since the auto deposit  was out of sight out of mind.

True, I do something similar, but hard to add more than that, some months can't. It sucks the financial situations a lot of college kids are in, but I did know what I was getting into so it is, what it is.
I do agree though, the compound interest is quite nice once you really start adding it up.
