Well, today I say goodbye to @WKUSports. Itís been an unbelievable five years on the Hill. I canít thank WKU, and the Bowling Green community enough for making this place feel like home. On Monday, I start a new chapter with the @Charlotte49ers and canít wait to get started. https://t.co/aTb4MvgRyw

Did anyone hear anything about this? Do we have a new marketing director?

Why would he make a lateral move to come here?

For non-coaching positions, we are not a lateral move.

Bowling Green is a small town with an aging population compared to Charlotte being a booming city full of young people and wealth. The opportunity to make an impact as a marketing director (assuming that is his role) is much greater here. If he rocks things out at WKU, there is only so much opportunity to grow because the population, corporate support, and local alumni base is far, far smaller.

Who would have hired him?  Could it be for AD position?

He is going to be the new Marketing leader here. He is not hired for the AD gig.  The search started well before Judy announced her retirement.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks! And I hope he comes here and makes a huge impact!

I hope this guy is an upgrade, but who actually hires for this position?  I would hope that Judy does not get any say in hiring till she walks out the door.

I was wondering the same thing.  It seems like this would be a hire for the new AD.

http://wkusports.com/news/2012/9/24/Zack_McKay_Hired_as_Director_of_Marketing_at_WKU.aspx

McKay comes to WKU after spending the previous four years as the Director of Marketing with Nelligan Sports Marketing at IPFW University. In his role with Mastodon Athletics, McKay coordinated all marketing and promotional efforts for men's and women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball. He also managed television and radio media rights and created and executed the Junior Mastodon Kids Club and the IPFW Student Stampede.

Prior to arriving in Fort Wayne, McKay worked for the Indianapolis Indians, a Triple-A minor league baseball team, and the Indiana Pacers, and his start in intercollegiate athletics came as marketing assistant at the University of Louisville, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Sport Administration in 2007.

This would be Spease's hire, I'm fairly certain of that. I understand and appreciate things will change when the new AD rolls up but someone in Spease's position should being acting "as-if" the job will remain his and make the best hire he possibly can.

So he is around 32 years old, which is young enough to be social media savvy, but old enough to understand work.  He has worked for minor league baseball, and nobody understands marketing and the need to work to fill seats better than they do.  He has seen big time sports (Louisville and the Pacers), and is coming from one of our peers.  On paper this looks like a great hire.

Also, if he graduated from UL in 2007, then he is likely familiar with how good things CAN be here given that we shared leagues with UL from ~1990-2005.

From a WKU poster on the CUSA board:

Marketing at WKU has always been somewhat lacking. My guess is that has more to do with budget constraints than anything. I guess they do the best they can with what they have to work with. They are good about getting local businesses involved with stuff and giving back to the community with things like big brothers & big sisters, etc. Zack is a really good guy though. Met and talked with him on numerous occasions. He will be a good addition to your athletics department.
