List them as UNC Chapel Hill. Don’t be a beta.

Exhibition tonight vs Czech Republic National team.

After seeing one practice last month, and assuming everyone is healthy, here is my way too early line-up prediction.

Reece Hampton CF
Drew Ober LF
Jackson Mims  3B
Harris Yett DH/ C
Dominick Cammarata RF
Zack Smith C/ DH
Jesse Gonzales 1B
Hunter Jones SS
Tommy Bullock 2B

The practice I saw a month ago, Jones was only playing the field because he was still recovering from wrist surgery, Yett was out with a back injury, and Ober was not out there.

Tate Pennington was at SS opposite of Jones
Jake Whitcomb was opposite Bullock at 2B
Eric Lansinger was alternating at 3B with Mims
Sam Mennitt was Catching opposite of Smith. Seems like he can play anywhere.
Chase Haywood and Brandon Kunz were out in LF in Ober's absence.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the Freshman at DH or 1B, depending on how much offense they bring. Lansinger had a pretty big frame.
I'm guessing whoever has the biggest bat between Bullock, Whitcomb, and Pennington will be our 2B. I'll give the edge to the JUCO.
Zack Smith and Yett could alternate at 1B and C this season, opening up the DH spot.

Not much to take away from the 3-0 win except for where the new guys are playing.  Still didn't see Ober last night, which is concerning.  Here was the line-up.

Hampton-8

Elwood-7
Mims-5
Yett-2
Smith-3
Cammarata-9
Bullock-4
McLaughlin-DH
Jones-6

Elwood was in LF, and lefty McLaughlin was the DH.  He was a late JUCO signee.

Pitching only allowed 3 hits and had a no-hitter after 6. Got a look a a few new guys. Here's who pitched.
Jonah Patten 2 IP
Josh Maciejewski 2 IP
Patrick Szczypinski - FR RHP
Joey Cooner, Jr. - JR LHP
Philip Perry
Matt Brooks
Carson Pinkney  JR- RHP

Appears we have serviceable pitching, and a really good defense, but this group may struggle
to score runs....especially if word gets around that no one on the team seems to be able to hit an off speed pitch other than Hampton.

Pretty cool time at the Green-White Game on Friday.  There was a reunion for players who played in the Gary Robinson Era for Homecoming Weekend.  They stopped the game in the 7th inning and honored them and unveiled a new plaque at the Hayes.  These were the guys who physically built the baseball stadium back in the early 80's.

Some new renderings of the new indoor hitting facility.

They have started construction on relocating the home bullpen which will now be behind the RF fence.  The wooden fence has been taken down. I believe construction on the indoor facility starts at the 1st of the year.

Mr. B, I know this is probably like asking if Water is wet, but the hitting facility will be a functional bullpen for when it's really freaking cold... right?  Just making sure.  I know you ideally want both accessible during games.

I'm sure they will have the ability to bring mounds in when needed.  The floorplan I saw had room for 3 - 15' x 80' cages and a waiting area.

I'm not sure what the tall structure in the background is.  It is in the direction of the high rises though.  That's my best guess.

It is, but it looks close----like it could be in the small parking lot between the tennis center and the soccer stadium.......thought maybe we had hidden plans for an athletes village or something.

We lost 4 starters in the heart of our line-up and our Friday night ace to the draft and graduation from last season.

Losing Laws to the draft, and losing Zach Flanagan to career ending injury, our starting pitching still looks strong with 4 returning guys with weekend starting experience. These 4 guys will likely battle for the 3 weekend spots. The other may be put in the closer's role.
--LHP Josh Maciejewski SR- has been a weekend starter since his Freshman season, struggled a little down the stretch last season and went into more bullpen/closers role.
-- RHP Jonah Patten SR- Went from closer role to weekend starter late in the season due to injuries last season.
-- RHP Matt Brooks SO- C-USA All Freshman team- stepped into starters role late last season.
-- RHP Colby Bruce SO-  Mostly bullpen work last year, but started early in the season on a 4 game weekend.

We return 5 more pitchers in the bullpen, lefties: Horkey, Craver, Morrison and righties; Perry and Wynn.
This past recruiting class added 10 arms to the staff, 4 JUCOs and 6 Freshman.  I haven't seen much of the new guys so I'm not sure what to expect.

There will be lots of competition from the newcomers for innings. We appear to be much deeper and talented with our bullpen this year, but not as experienced.

5 starters return to the line-up and we have holes to fill at 1B, 2B, and both corner OF spots, losing Brett Netzer, TJ Nichting, Zach Jarrett, and Logan Sherer from the heart of the line-up.

We had a pretty good rotation behind the plate last season between Zack Smith and Harris Yett.  I think we will rotate them back and forth between C, 1B, and DH depending on match-up and rest this season. Smith was on the All Freshman team last year, and Yett had a big summer in the CPL. Freshman Sam Mennitt is a utility player and will be the 3rd catcher.

At 1B we have the rotation of Smith/ Yett, and JUCO Jesse Gonzales and/ or ERic Lansinger will be in the mix for PT there.

At 2B there will be a battle between newcomers JUCO Tommy Bullock, FR Jake Whitcomb, and FR Tate Pennington.  I'm guessing whoever has the better bat will play.

At SS we have Hunter Jones returning for his SR year. Good defensively, had his best season at the plate last year, batting .310.  Pennington played behind him in the fall.

At 3B we return JR Jackson Mims. He should be one of the bigger bats in our line-up.  FR Eric Lansinger and Sam Mennitt played behind him in the fall.

JR Reece Hampton returns in CF.  He saw a step back from his Freshman season last year, but got hot late in the year and had a good summer in the Cape Cod League.  SO Todd Elwood was behind him this fall.

JUCO Dominick Cammarata was in RF this fall. He is a big bat from Pitt CC, and originally signed and played at Tennessee.

A key for this offense is getting SO Drew Ober back this season in LF.  He got injured early last season but was batting .354 after 13 games before the injury.  He played some LF in the green-white scrimmage, but had to throw everything underhanded.

DH is up in the air depending on the Smith/ Yett rotation behind the plate.  JUCO Levi McLaughlin was there for the exhibition game, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a newcomer like Pennington, Lansinger, Whitcomb, Mennitt, Haywood, or Gonzales get some time there.

On paper, we are a deeper team than last year. This team will not be as talented as last years team off the bat, but could develop into a very strong team by season's end.

From only seeing a few scrimmages and the Czech game, looks like we have some good young bats to work with.  Excited to see how they develop and where they fit in this year and in the future.  The facility improvements are big time for player development.

I hope they name something over there after Coach Hibbs.  He deserves it.

The season previews are starting to come out from all the different college baseball publications.  College Baseball Daily predicts the Niners to finish 3rd in C-USA. Matt Brooks picked to be all conference and Mims an Honorable Mention.

Charlotte (2017 Record: 34-24, 18-12)

The 49ers had a very good 2017 regular season, but like a lot of other very good Conference USA teams, they were left out of the postseason. They may have had the best case with wins over Wake Forest and NC State, and two wins in the Conference USA Baseball Tournament, but alas, they didn’t make the cut.

Lineup:
Charlotte brings back several key contributors from last year’s team, including third baseman Jackson Mims, shortstop Hunter Jones and center fielder Reece Hampton. Mims hit .319 with 47 runs scored, 20 doubles, 6 home runs and 39 RBI. Jones hit .312 with 35 runs scored, while Hampton hit .264 with 31 runs scored. Drew Ober should be a big part of the lineup as well in 2018. He was hitting .354 last year before going down with an injury. Junior college transfers Tommy Bullock and Dominick Cammarata should have an immediate impact on the infield.

Pitching:
Matt Brooks was named to the All-CUSA Freshman team last year after posting a 3.14 ERA in 63 innings pitched with 58 strikeouts and 2 saves. Left-handed pitcher Josh Maciejewski had a 5.35 ERA in 77.1 innings pitched last year with 59 strikeouts. Jonah Patten saved seven games for Charlotte last year with a 4.54 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched with 40 strikeouts. How the pitching staff comes together will determine whether Charlotte is an NCAA Tournament team or not in 2018.

2018 Outlook:
“We were a ‘bubble NCAA team last year’ and look to compete for a spot in the tournament this year,” said Head Coach Loren Hibbs. “We have another challenging schedule that should be top-50 (minimum) in the country, and have 30 games in the always tough Conference USA.”

I am not a big baseball fan, but I am a Loren Hibbs fan.  This checks all the expectation boxes for me:

Every coach at Charlotte should have some version of these goals each year.

Our baseball team can realistically be the only Niner team to go to post season in Judy's final year and a half.

That scoreboard seems to crap out every season at some point.

Speaking of scoreboards, ODU just put up a nice video board.

We haven't replaced the scoreboard over the off season? WTF?
The Belk Tower was in much better shape than that thing is.

We need to get us an old fashioned scoreboard that requires someone to manually change the number of runs scored each half inning. That way, the Uh-Huh guy will have something to keep him busy when he is not chasing foul balls.

Oh yawn. Because of our excellent chancellor's demands, we will have a much nicer looking hitting facility than they do.  ;D

That level of ticket demand reminds me of the buzz and excitement surrounding our volleyball program last fall.
