It's a shame that JMU gets more fans at football games than we do.

They've won two national titles since the turn of the century and it's Harrisonburg, VA - not exactly a lot of other attractions competing for the entertainment dollar.

This, this, and this.

I get that, but we are in a metro with over 1 million people, on a campus with close to 30,000 students, playing FBS. Our attendance is pretty sad.

Let's not overlook the obvious.  When you have a team that has won two National Championships recently, and went 14-1 last year while outscoring their opponents by 382 points, putting butts in the seats is infinitely easier than what we are trying to do.

Man, WINNING will have a 1000x more affect on attendance than advertising. What a joke y'all keep telling yourselves.  Also, don't forget there are many fans/alums of other teams in this "metro with over a million people", who don't give one squat about our school or athletics, and never will.

people like a winner.  Apps attendance was decent but nothing special until the three-year run of championships. Their alums didn't care that it was at the fcs level.

Gotta wonder if Chattanooga and/or James Madison will make inquiries about joining the Sun Belt with football-only members Idaho and New Mexico State exiting after the 2017 season - the former becoming a full member of the Big Sky and reclassifying football to FCS while the former will become an FBS independent.

JMU already turned the Sun Belt down once. There's really nothing for them there except maybe App. They wanted in CUSA.

They'll probably end up in this DII league with us app ODU Coastal and Troy that all of you are so desperate to relegate us to.

Had forgotten the SBC had made overtures to JMU about membership.

Anyway, with the Sun Belt splitting football into divisions and inaugurating a conference title game in 2018, won't be surprised to see Karl Benson & Co. make moves to seek out additional members within its geographical footprint after deciding not to renew associate membership to Idaho and NMSU.

MVC votes to add Valpo.
And now the Horizon League gets to decide what path they want to take with the loss of the Crusaders.

IUPUI reportedly offered an invitation to join the Horizon as replacement for Valpo. Would insure the league maintains an Indiana presence and in the HQ city of Indianapolis to boot!

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/19743196/why-2023-next-big-date-conference-shuffling%20?ex_cid=Twitter_Rittenberg_2023realignment

The following paragraphs from the article make me extremely nervous...

"Realignment strategy also should change. In 2012, the Big Ten added Maryland and Rutgers more for their surrounding television markets than for the individual fan bases they added to the league. But if traditional cable subscription numbers continue to decrease, leagues might be less concerned about markets and would instead target members with large, passionate fan bases, willing to pay whatever to see their teams.

That's why football-only members could be a bigger factor for power conferences when realignment stirs again. That could be good news for BYU, a football-only candidate for the Big 12 last year, or even Group of 5 football heavyweights like Boise State and Houston."

FWIW, BYU was a candidate for FULL membership in the Big 12. Rittenberg should know that. Geez!

Keep politics out of conf. realignment.  Certain people tweeted B12 not to let in BYU over their LGBT views.  No one wants to talk politics at a ball game.
CHP sold out.  I declare Nick McEntyre our Chancellor-In-Exile!

Just a thought. LDS was originally thought of as a cult. Some still think they are. Their founders were killed and followers run out of NY state. They ended up in Utah to escape and set up in the wilderness. Now they are pretty much mainstream, but that would not have happened until they officially dropped the polygamy part of their beliefs. As we know some still practice polygamy as part of this religion, but it's not part of the church's "official" tenants now.

https://www.bloombergquint.com/onweb/2017/05/31/facing-charter-shortage-college-football-reconsiders-the-bus

This is going to be a huge issue for G5 schools and may have a big impact before 2020.

Combine that with the lack of TV money we are getting and I think the writing is on the wall for our conferences as we know them, potentially even for the big schools.

If the air planes aren't available, it doesn't matter what the TV revenue is.

Savannah State has announced that they will reclassify to D-II after joining D-I ranks in 2002. Spent 8 years as an independent prior to joining the MEAC in 2010.

Meanwhile, D-II California Baptist has accepted an invitation to join the WAC and will formally apply for D-I membership next year. The 9,000+ student private school in Riverside will open a new 5,200 seat basketball arena this year.
Just learned that North Alabama making the move from D-II to D-I in 2018. Will join A-Sun in all sports but football. Will be an FCS independent in 2018, then a football-only member of the  Big South beginning in 2019. UNA had originally sought membership in the Ohio Valley, which includes another Alabama school in Jacksonville State.
