I am embarrassed to say until today I had never heard of the Carolina Lighting.  Here's a video I cam across celebrating the 75th anniversary of Memorial Stadium and the 30th anniversary of the Carolina Lightning winning a championship.

The greatest 49er Pep Band drummer ever.  Sorry Dustin.

I remember the Lightnin.....my dad took me to a coupl games, including the championship if my memory is accurate.

Late 70s/early 80s, we also had the Carolina Chargers football team and they had large crowds as well. George Sauer (former NY Jet receiver) was the Head Coach and he brought Joe Namath in for an autograph session one game. I was at that game too.

Good times.

More of an ironic fail I think.  He practically spelled it out in his response.  Haha.  So was this team sponsored by a regional company that specialized in illumination?

As long as that list is, it still forgot the WNBA team. Wasn't it the Sting?

Did not know of the Clippers football team. Reading their history is a little scary. I hope this is not a foreshadowing of what we can expect from the '49ers. Leagues breaking up and a team with no home.

I remember the Lightnin' well, especially local player Tony Suarez.  That was a great match for the ASL championship at Memorial Stadium and, living up to the team's name, there was a fierce thunderstorm during the game!

Anyway, FWIW, the Lightnin' weren't actually the first local pro team to win a championship.  The Charlotte Checkers won EHL and SHL championships in 1956, 1970, 1971, 1975, and 1976, while the Charlotte Hornets baseball team won a Southern League championship in 1971 when they were the Twins' AA affiliate.

Cobras. both the AFL team and the really old indoor lax team. and its starting to look like Charlottes newest pro sports team, the Charlotte Copperheads, are gone before they even got started
