Gilmore signed with the Colonels before the NBA draft. The other "great center" entering the NBA/ABA that year was Jim McDaniels of Western Kentucky. He signed with the Carolina Cougars.

Julius Erving left Massachusetts after the '70-'71 season, a year early, and signed with the Virginia Squires of the ABA.

Two of the players listed above are Hall of Fame members.

Remember Dr. J well from his ABA days. Saw him do a 180-reverse dunk vs the Cougars at the original Charlotte Coliseum when he played for the NY Nets.

McDaniels had an interesting pro career - 2nd round NBA draftee by Seattle who opted for Carolina of ABA then joined the Supersonics following his rookie season with Cougars. NCAA voided WKU's 1971 Final Four appearance after accusing McDaniels of signing with an agent while still a Hilltopper.
