freakin awesome sale at 49erfanatics.com
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:44:22 PM »

Hadn't checked out 49erfanatics in a while, so I pulled it up the other day, and WOW!  There are some seriously sweet deals in the clearance section.  A polo for FIVE BUCKS!?  Hell yeah, I scooped up one of those while they were still there.

I'll probably pick up a pair of the shorts as well.

Any idea how long it takes to ship?  I did the priority mail.

If Nick got to the post office today, you could have them tomorrow. If he was watching the ACC tournament, they'll ship Friday and you'll have them Saturday.

A personal comment: The original prices on these items was excellent to begin with and far better quality than similar merchandise in the bookstore. Folks asked for it, and quite honestly, some of it did not sell as I would have expected. Those type items (jerseys, for example) may not be ordered in the future.

Nick has worked tirelessly and put out a lot of money to fund this. I hope you folks will support his efforts to be the best option in 49er gear.

Just hooked the wife up with some gear and grabbed another pair of shorts.  I couldn't pass on another pair for that price.

Yes, you did.  We only had a handful that were taking up space on the shelf and we needed to move them.

Now that the season is over (please, no NIT game) I'd like to ask for some feedback.  Seriously.  We started this a little over a year ago and since then we've made some mistakes and leared some lessons.  At this point, we're trying to clear out the inventory of out of season items and begin thinking about next year.  It's going to be a fairly dead summer.  I'd be curiousl to hear what anyone has to say.  There are things that I wish we had that we didn't and things that we had that we could have done without (see: basketball jerseys and shorts). Pricing? Marketing? Quality? I'd love hear some comments.

Nick,

I bought a jacket, but I didn't buy any shirts cause I rarely wear short sleeves during the season.

The jacket is nice, but the grey on it isnt really a school color, so I'm kinda mixed on whether or not I like that.

It's so hard to find a long sleeve shirt (other than a sweatshirt) that looks good. The bookstore has tried a bunch of stuff including designer shirts (Hilfiger) with logos, and it doesn't look like those are selling either.

You could always preview new item ideas with a NNN "focus group" if you wanted... but you're probably already doing that.

Oh, and its really niche, but the bookstore is understocked on Toddler gear, especially for boys. They have a Tshirt and a couple of hoodies. It's such a niche that I'm sure it doesnt pay to stock much and they outgrow it so fast.

Understocked? They have as much little kids gear as they do adults gear. You can outfit your kid in a 49ers/Barnes & Noble basketball uniform for about $90.  ;D

I completely agree.  For those of you who have purchased from Nick, it's obviously appreciated but it's frustrating to know that as much as people on this board whine & complain about the selection & price of merch available that they HAVEN'T supported 49erfanatics for whatever reason.

I am in the market for a couple of long-sleeve T's.  I went in the bookstore before the Richmond game to see if they had any.  They had 4 or 5 different styles but for some reason they have to print something on every inch of the shirt.  I didn't buy any.

The front of them looked great, but they should have left it at that.  I can't stand stuff printed down the sleeve or on the back of a long-sleeve T.  It looks to NASCAR.

If you get a simple Charlotte logo across the chest of a long-sleeve T, I'd jump all over it.

And as far as Nick goes, he has worked his tail off trying to get this off the ground.  There is no reason that he should be reducing prices to have to move product.  His prices are outstanding to begin with.  On top of that, he has sponsored basically everything that has to do with 49er sports.  We need to support him, he actualy cares about what we think (i.e. his comments in this thread are evident of that), unlike the merchandise manager running the bookstore.

Thanks for the kind comments.  This has been a lot of fun and we are going to continue to move forward.

To answer your question eason, business has been decent.  Especially considering that we are a first year business in this economic environment.  But we can always do better.  We'll always want to do better.  We've got big plans, but we have got to take it one step at a time.  I'm glad that you like the items that you purchased!

NA - Thanks for your purchase, you should get it today! You make valid points and I'd like to address them as well as tell a few trade secrets.
We are continuing to work on forming new relationships with vendors that can provide great products at a good price.  Nike is out of the question.  They simply won't sell to us.  Anybody that has to have the swoosh will have to go to the bookstore and that's the way they like it.  Underarmour is a little better, but the minimums can still be restrictive.  So far, our polos and jackets have come from a company called Antigua.  They are known mainly as a golf apparel company.  They sponsor a handful for golfers on the PGA and LPGA tours.  They also produce a line of licensed merchandise for colleges and MLB.  They are good for us because they do quality merchandise, at a good price, with reasonable minimums.  You can take a look at their online catalog here: http://pageflippress.com/publications/antigua/2010/sportsummer/  We can put a Charlotte logo on anything that you see there.  You'll notice that they have green in some items but not others.  In the case of the jacket, they paired the green with grey.  We're kind of stuck with it if we want to produce that jacket.

On the subject of toddler gear, that's going to be a tough one for us for the time being.  You just have to stock too many sizes, and to be honest, the margin is just too low for us right now.  That's not a great answer, I know.  But it won't always be that way.

I would definitely be interested in a lightweight golf shirt with a C-pick on the left chest. Something like the Adidas Clim-a-cool type of material.

I know the bookstore has these, but would rather give my money to your group.

Nick,

Sorry if it sounded like I was griping. I really appreciate what you are doing and I apologize for not buying more. Will try to rectify that.

The toddler thing was anecdotal - I took my 3 year old to the bookstore. He already has a hoodie and a T shirt in his size. There's not much else out there for boys his age, but then again, it's a ridiculously small niche.

The polos are nice, but I never bought one cause I own 2 others that I almost never wear (summer gear). I'd rather have something tasteful in terms of a long sleeve T like N1NER said. I like understated stuff - small lettering/fonts. Kind of the antithesis to the college kids wearing 51/50 hats... I also dont mind that you're getting gear from a golf supplier, cause I like a lot of golf shirts, windbreakers, pullovers, sweaters, etc. Probably more boringly age appropriate, but season appropriate is probably important too. I'll try to take a look at that Antigua catalog this weekend and give you some feedback.

I hope a few more people chime in too. Relying on the opinions of this particular old fart isn't a wise business decision. What else would NNN like to see from Nick & Co @ 49erfanatics?

Looking at the catalog for antigua, I'm guessing we are "dark pine" and "hunter green" depending on the product.

NA -

No need to apologize.  I didn't take any offense to the points you raised.  I'm glad that you brought them up.  I like talking about this stuff.  I don't want anyone to think that I don't.  We have all been mystified at our merchandise situation for some time.  I've picked up a lot of information on the subject and I like to let our fans know how it works.  That way we can all be more knowledgeable on the subject.  As all of you know, I'm not some corporate buyer in a far away office, I'm just a fan like the rest of the posters here.

There's a lot of things that fans might be surprised to know about our merchandising. Who would have ever thought that being a Nike school would be a bad thing for us?  Well on the merchandise front, it is.  They severely restrict their distibution channels and don't do that much for the schools that they don't care about.  If you'll notice, there are Nike items in the bookstore, but they are not what you usually see on our coaches.  It's their more generic items (with a not-so-generic price tag).  If you look at another school, one that Nike truly supports, there is a big difference.  I hate to use the example, but if you see Butch Davis wearing a coaching shirt on the sidelines, you can walk into one of the stores on Franklin and buy that same shirt.  Not a similar shirt, that same style shirt.

Take a look at our uniforms.  We wore the same uniforms as probably 2/3 of our opponents this year.  Small programs, bigger programs, it didn't matter.  The only thing that made them ours was the color and the word Charlotte.  I gaurantee you that Nike already knows what everybody's uniform will look like for next year too.  They delivered this year's design last April.  Why is it that even the bookstore, who carries Nike, has jerseys and shorts but they are not Nike?  Becuase Nike won't make them.  Not worth their time.

When it comes to understated, you, me and N1NER are all on the same page there.  If we ever write something down the sleeve or on one of the shoulders, slap me.

This is good.  Please feel free to make other comments.  Anybody that knows me knows that most of what I say is not in what I say, but how I say it.  That makes typed messages on a message board difficult somethimes, but I promise you I'm as goo dnatured as they come.  I've only gotten pissed at one person a message board before, but Chisox knows he's my boy and that I appreciate him.

Sorry, I'm not savy enough to have multiple quotes in the same post...
It's been touch and go with the students.  Admittedly, we haven't been as geared towards them as we'd like to be.  However, football jerseys have done well with both alums and students.  Probably our best selling item.  We're actually at the point where we either need to reorder them or go a different direction.  We've even contemplated an alternate jersey.  I suppose we could do a road white, but that seems a little bland.  Thoughts?

We've got a Norm product in the works, but its too early to tell if it will pan out yet.  But if it does, I think that folks will like it.

Happy birthday!  yes, dark pine or hunter green are the colors we use.  I don't know why I hadn't thought of this before, but I'll mention it while I'm thinkg about it.  If you see something in that catalog that you like, but we're not carrying it on the site, we can probably still get it for you.  One of the great things about doing business with Antigua is that the minimums are based on the logo and not the individual item.  So if we were placing an order (or a re-order) and there was something specific that you wanted, we could price it out for you and order it.  Just a thought.

haha I don't even remember what that was about now.

Thanks again for all of your hard work on the site.  It's definitely something we've needed for a very long time, and you've really busted your ass to make it happen.  So far, I've either bought or had someone buy for me as a present: the tailgating football, the visor, the Tenn trip, the white C-pick polo, the ski jacket, a gift card, and a green polo.  I couldn't be happier with all of the products.

I agree 100% with the posters who want "understated" apparel.  I hate cluttered and "busy" shirts.  Simpler is better imo when it comes to gear.

I'm looking forward to receiving my white polo in the mail, and can't wait to see what 49erfanatics rolls out next!
